Search engines like Google can take awhile to index your website and include it in their results. We submit your site when it is created, but they tend to shy away from sites until they are generally a month old, although it can sometimes take longer. This is to prevent short-term scam sites from getting into the search engine indices.
The best thing to do get indexed quickly and get a good ranking is to get lots of links to your site out in as many places online as you can (trade links with friends, post on forums etc) as this increases the chance of one of Google's bots hitting your site.
Another important step to take is to make sure that your Website Title (which you can set via your Control Panel) has your name and what you do in it. 'Dennis Hopper - Watercolor Artist' would be an example of a good title.
If you're using a New Customizable Skin, make sure your name and the keywords you want people to search for you by on Google appear on your Home Page. A little bit of repetition doesn't hurt to let search engines know that you mean business with these words.
Signing up for Google Analytics is another way to get on Google's radar. You can do this through the 'Usage' section of your Control Panel.
You can also set Keywords in the 'Title/Copyright/Keywords' section, however please note that due to wide abuse of the MetaTag Keyword system Google doesn't pay much attention to these anymore...Can't hurt though!
Access by clicking the Title/Copyright Holder/Keywords link in your control panel
